“Verano” (“summer”) is a web artwork inspired by an oil painting also entitled Verano, created in 1937 by Mexican artist Antonio Ruiz, better known as “El Corcito”. The painting represents a working-class couple looking at the window of a luxury clothing store in Mexico City. Inside the showcase are three blond, white-skin mannequins wearing bathing suits, placed in a decor suggesting a beach by the sea. The painting clearly alludes to socioeconomic as well as ethnic inequalities. It also evokes the impact of urbanization, of publicity, of foreign models or paradigms (specially hollywoodian) on Mexican culture. Such questions remain relevant today, in Mexico as well as Canada and many other countries. The website “Verano” addresses basically the same themes in a contemporary way, through a reflection on the problems and contradictions of Internet art.

On the structural and aesthetic level, the website “Verano” is very similar to a boutique window. In fact, the site is a parody, an imitation of websites published by fashion clothing companies. At times the viewers may have the illusion that they are visiting the site of a cool, young, blue-jeans brand called “Verano”. But this brand doesn’t exist, it is merely a parodic fiction. Anyway the illusion cannot last, for the commercial aesthetic – seductive, alluring and stereotypical –  is constantly diverted and ruined by the inclusion of fiction texts or clashing hyperlinks.

Another reference to publicity is found on the page entitled "Verano": it includes an animated montage of photos of technological objects (cell phones, computers, video cameras, etc.),  that I took in Mexico City. (To see the montage, the mouse must be placed over the hat of the lady in red; it will appear in the store window.)

The texts are excerpts from a fictional character’s blog. He’s a Montreal artist, tall and blond, invited by a Mexican curator to spend a few months in Mexico City. Between museum visits, dinners with friends, late parties and tequila fits, he’s desperately trying to create a web piece inspired by the painting Verano by El Corcito. He is not a particularly likeable character, but at least, this anti-hero faces some of his doubts. He writes about various things: Internet art and its limited audience; poverty and begging; his perceptions as a foreigner wandering about the streets of Mexico City; his creative problems and blocks. He mentions that physically, he looks a lot like the male mannequin in the Verano painting: the “blond gringo”, perhaps his alter ego. His reflections are integrated to the site as comic-strip balloons that don’t point at anyone (somewhat similar to a movie voice-off).

“Verano” is a “work in progress”, evolving through time. One aspect of this evolution is the translation into different languages. Presently available in Spanish, French and English, I hope to have it translated into Náhuatl, and other languages as well (it’s a question of budget and time – translating such a website is a long and expensive process).

I started “Verano” in Mexico City during an artist residency at the Centro Multimedia of the CENART (Centro Nacional de las Artes). The residency was made possible by a grant from the Québec Council for the Arts (CALQ) and the Mexican Council for the Arts (FONCA). Back to Montreal, I developped the project during a residency at Agence TOPO, an artist-run centre specialized in Internet art and multimedia.

My warmest thanks to the people and organizations that made this project possible. The site couldn’t exist without their dedicated support. Please check the site’s Credits page for more details.
